July, 2009 We call it “Gee-clay” spelled giclee the literal French translation for “squirt” and that is exactly what it is, a squirt of ink from a technically advanced inkjet printer that, in the hands of an expert technician, will produce a perfect likeness of a fine piece of original art. Thus, you can afford a fine reproduction of an original for a fraction of the price. An artist may demand $10,000 - $20,000 for an original work, but will sign a limited edition giclee which will sell for less than $500 in a fine art gallery. Now that inks have been perfected to last for over 100 years, this process is rapidly becoming the most popular form of reproducing fine art. The process itself is only about 20 years old. In the past, fading ink was problematic, sometimes leaving people with a blank or badly faded canvas. However, significant improvements have been made to the process more recently, so collectors can feel confident in the long, beautiful life of a giclee reproduction. Museum quality Giclée reproductions are recognized as the next best alternative to owning the original artwork, and can be found in the world's finest museums and art galleries. More traditional methods of printmaking, such as the familiar serigraph and lithograph, have one thing in common: they are labor intensive and therefore carry a very high price tag. The amount a publisher must pay to produce the art, and the amount a gallery must pay to acquire the art, dictates what you, the consumer, will pay to own the art. The economics associated with giclee production have made fine art much more affordable. In addition, the lower costs of production have given artists, who previously could not afford it, access to the global market place. So, giclee production has given the consumer a great opportunity to see and purchase art which previously would not have been available, and emerging artists now have the chance to be seen and appreciated by the masses.
What is the bottom line? No matter how you say it or spell it, the giclee is here now and will be around for decades to come. It has evolved into the new darling of the art world. The quality and affordability of the giclee are unmatched! Giclees are coveted by collectors, as well as highly valued by the average man. So, do not worry about purchasing a giclee, as it’s price will please and it is nearly impossible to distinguish from the original artwork.

June, 2009 Am I interested in art?
Am I knowledgeable about art? One way to find out what kind of art lover you are is by visiting galleries and art museums. Museums will give you an indication of the field; galleries will tell you what's going on in the world of art right now. Think of galleries and shows as the marketplace; you must attend them to know what's going on. As a bonus, gallery staff can usually answer a lot of your questions -- but keep in mind, they are salespeople.
Am I a first-time buyer? Perhaps the best way to insure your investment is by purchasing something you like. Art prices rise and fall, so if you buy something that you like, you'll be able to live with it through the lean years.
